How much does a custom coloring book cost? Real prices

Black and white coloring storybook page from the Reyes demo book
A page from our Reyes demo book. The Reyes family is an illustrative model family made up for our samples.

A custom coloring book costs anywhere from almost nothing to around $60, depending on what "custom" means. A stock coloring book with your child's name worked in runs about $10 to $17. Turning your own photos into pages with an app costs a few dollars, plus printing. A story written and drawn around your family usually lands between $30 and $60, more with extras and shipping. Doing it yourself costs paper, ink and an evening.

The price tracks how much of the book is actually about your child. Here is what each kind costs and why.

Prices by kind of custom coloring book

These are prices we read on each seller's own page. Sales change them often, so check before you order.

Kind Example Price we saw (October 2026) What you get
Name-only coloring book I See Me! $9.99 to $16.99 Stock art, your child's name in the text, printed
Photo-to-page app FotoMedley $4.99 for 10 creations Line art from your photos, you print it
Avatar storybook (not a coloring book) Hooray Heroes, Wonderbly $34.99 to $39.99 and up A character you build, full color, printed
Story starring your family Several makers, including us About $29 to $60 Your family drawn as the characters, PDF or printed
Do it yourself Free tools plus a printer Paper and ink Whatever you make

Name-only books. I See Me!'s My Very Own Trucks book was listed at $9.99 when we checked in October 2026. Across their personalized coloring range, most books were listed at $9.99 to $13.99, with sticker and crayon gift sets at $14.99 to $16.99. These are polished and cheap because the art is the same for every child. Only the name changes.

Photo-to-page apps. FotoMedley's pricing page listed credit packs at $4.99 for 10 creations, $9.99 for 25 and $29.99 for 100 when we checked in October 2026, with one free credit for new accounts. That is the cheapest way to get pages that look like your family, but you get loose pages rather than a book, and you print and bind them yourself. Results depend heavily on the photo.

Avatar storybooks. These are not coloring books, but they come up in the same search, so it helps to know the price. Hooray Heroes listed its custom storybooks at $39.99, shown marked down from $59.99, when we checked in October 2026, and its birthday book page listed tracked shipping from $7.99. Wonderbly's I Spy You! was listed from $34.99. You build a cartoon character that resembles your child (hair, skin tone and so on) rather than sending photos.

Storybooks drawn from your photos. This is the category Colorkin is in, so take this paragraph with that in mind. Colorkin's Digital Storybook is $29 for 12 story pages and a cover as a printable PDF, and the Printed Keepsake is $59 for 16 pages plus cover with free US shipping. The pages are drafted with AI illustration tools from your photos and a person checks each one. Other makers price their own versions differently, and some charge per extra person, so compare totals.

What actually drives the price

How much is made just for you. A name in a stock book costs the seller almost nothing per copy. Converting each of your photos into clean line art, writing a story around your family and checking likeness is real work per order, by software, a person or both.

Number of people and pets. Many makers price per character. A book with two kids, two grandparents and the dog can cost noticeably more than one with a single child, so count heads before you compare quotes.

PDF or printed. A printable PDF skips printing and postage. A printed book adds the print cost, packaging and shipping, which is why the same book costs noticeably more in print.

Page count. More pages means more art to make and more paper to print. For toddlers and preschoolers, 12 to 16 pages is plenty. Our guide to personalized coloring books for toddlers explains why shorter often works better at that age.

Binding and paper. Print-on-demand printer Lulu's coloring book page listed an 8.5 x 11 inch black-and-white paperback on 60# uncoated paper starting at 4.28 USD, and a coil-bound version that lies flat starting at 7.14 USD, when we checked in October 2026. Those are starting print costs for one copy before shipping, and they rise with page count. Coil binding costs more but lies flat on the table, which small hands appreciate.

Rush and holidays. Expedited shipping in December can add a lot to the total. Ordering early is the cheapest upgrade there is. Our guide to ordering a custom coloring book has a timeline that works backward from a gift date.

What it costs to make one yourself

If you have time, a homemade book can look just as much like your kids as a paid one. You need:

  • Photos and a free editor (GIMP, Photopea or a tracing app) to turn them into line art. The free photo-to-coloring-page guide walks through it.
  • A home printer and decent paper. Heavier paper takes markers better. The printing guide covers settings.
  • A stapler, a hole punch and ribbon, or a single print-on-demand copy if you want it bound.

Your real cost is time. Expect an evening for a handful of pages, longer for a full story. When I made the first coloring storybook for my own kids, the time went into getting the faces right, not the layout. That is the part worth spending on, whether you spend time or money.

How to judge whether a price is fair

A fair price buys you a book your child recognizes themselves in and actually colors. Before paying, ask:

  1. Can I see a sample made from one of my own photos?
  2. How many people and pets are included, and what does each extra cost?
  3. What paper is it printed on, and are pages one-sided?
  4. Is there a round of changes, and what is the refund policy?
  5. What is the total with shipping to my address by my date?

If a $10 name book makes your child happy, that is money well spent. If you want a book where your child sees their own face, budget for the $30 to $60 range or for an evening at the kitchen table. Our overview of personalized coloring books made from photos compares the kinds in more detail, and the personalized coloring books hub has the rest of the guides.

Questions parents ask

How much does a custom coloring book cost?

From about $10 for a stock coloring book with your child's name in it, to a few dollars for app-made pages you print yourself, to roughly $30 to $60 for a story drawn around your own family. Shipping, page count and printed vs PDF move the price most.

Why are custom coloring books more expensive than store coloring books?

Each one is made for one family: someone (or some software plus a person) has to turn your photos into clean line art, lay out a book, and print a single copy. A store book spreads its costs across thousands of identical copies.

Is a PDF or a printed custom coloring book better value?

A PDF is cheaper and lets you reprint favorite pages forever, which suits siblings. A printed book costs more but arrives ready to wrap and holds up better than loose printer paper.

What is the cheapest way to get a custom coloring book?

Make it yourself: turn photos into line art with a free editor, print at home and staple or bind the pages. Your cost is paper and ink, plus an evening.
