Birthday gifts for Grandma from the grandkids
The birthday gifts Grandma keeps are the ones with the grandkids in them: a recreated old photo framed next to the original, a birthday video with every grandchild in it, her own recipe baked by small helpers, or, for a big birthday, a bound book of letters and drawings from each grandchild. Add an afternoon together where she picks the plan, and you are most of the way there.
Below are birthday-specific ideas by the grandkids' ages, a plan for milestone birthdays, and things worth buying. For general, any-occasion ideas (handprints, coupon books, garden markers), see our guide to gifts for grandparents from grandkids, which this one tries not to repeat.
Ideas sorted by the grandkids' ages
Match the job to the child. The CDC lists scribbling as an 18-month milestone, and by 4 its checklist includes drawing a person with three or more body parts and talking about something that happened during the day. So a toddler contributes marks, a preschooler contributes drawings and opinions, and school-age kids can run a project.
| Grandkids' ages | Gift idea | Grown-up's part |
|---|---|---|
| Babies | A photo of the baby holding a sign with Grandma's age | Taking the photo, printing it |
| 1 to 2 | A birthday card with one scribble "candle" per year she has been a grandma | Drawing the cake outline, writing the caption |
| 3 to 5 | A drawing of Grandma at her birthday party, caption in their words | Writing down exactly what they say |
| 3 to 5 | Help bake her favorite cake or cookies from her own recipe | The oven |
| 6 and up | A recreated photo (see below) or a birthday interview | Finding the old photo, filming |
| Teens | Organize the cousins' video, edit it, and play it at dinner | Getting out of the way |
Recreate an old photo
This costs almost nothing and tends to get a long look and a laugh. Dig out a photo of Grandma as a child, or Grandma holding one of her own babies, and have a grandchild recreate it: same pose, similar clothes, similar background if you can manage it. Print the two side by side in one frame with the years underneath.
Variations that work well:
- A grandchild at the same age Grandma was in her school photo.
- The grandkids recreating a family photo from when their parent was small, in the same spot if the house is still in the family.
- A photo of Grandma holding her first grandchild, recreated with the same two people now.
A birthday interview, flipped
Most interview gifts have the grandkids answer questions about Grandma. On her birthday, flip it and have the grandkids interview her. StoryCorps publishes a free list of great questions, including "What is your earliest memory?" and "What is your favorite memory of me?" Let each grandchild choose one question, write it on a card, and ask it at the party while someone records on a phone. Five questions is plenty. The recording becomes a gift for the grandkids later as much as for her now.
A shorter version for little ones: each grandchild asks, "What was your birthday like when you were my age?"
For a big birthday: a book of letters
For a 70th, 80th or 90th, start about a month ahead.
- Send each grandchild's family a sheet of good paper and a deadline two weeks before the birthday.
- Each grandchild fills one page: older ones write a letter, younger ones draw her, and toddlers scribble while a parent writes one line underneath.
- Add a page from each of her children and any great-grandchildren.
- Scan the pages and print them as a book. Our guide to printing and binding a book at home works for this too, or use any photo book service.
- Bring the originals in a folder so she has the real paper as well.
If the family is spread out, the same book works by mail. Our guide to gifts for long-distance grandparents has more ways to keep far-away grandkids in the picture.
Gifts to buy from the grandkids
If you would rather buy, pick something the grandkids are part of.
| Idea | Example maker | The grandkids' part |
|---|---|---|
| A book of her stories, with her voice | Remento | Picking the questions she answers |
| Photo book of the year with her in it | Chatbooks, Shutterfly | Captions in their words |
| A digital frame the family keeps filling | Nixplay, Aura | Sending photos all year |
| Mailed card with photos | Postable | Their drawing on the front |
| Coloring storybook starring her and the grandkids | Colorkin | They are in it with her |
Remento describes its product as a hardcover book built from a loved one's spoken stories, with their voice playing back on every page. Set it up so the grandkids pick her questions and it becomes a shared project instead of homework.
Colorkin makes a coloring storybook from your family photos, with room for grandparents alongside the kids. Pages are drafted with AI illustration tools and checked and finished by a person. It is $29 as a printable PDF or $59 printed, with extra printed copies $19, which helps when several cousins want one. Allow a couple of weeks for the printed version. A free route is a single coloring page: turn a photo of Grandma with the grandkids into line art with our guide to making a coloring page from a photo for free, let the kids color it, and frame it.
Time is the other half
Whatever you give, add a date with the grandkids that she gets to plan. A zoo morning, lunch at her favorite place, an afternoon in her garden with small helpers, a sleepover if she wants one. Write it on a card the kids decorate so it is a real thing she can hold, and put the date on the calendar before the party ends.
If the grandkids are looking for a book to read with her, our list of grandmother books from every culture has good ones. More ideas by age and budget are in our gift ideas hub.
Questions parents ask
What can grandkids make Grandma for her birthday?
A recreated old photo framed next to the original, a birthday video with each grandchild singing or answering one question, a recipe of hers they help bake, a card with one candle drawn by each grandchild, or a pot they paint and plant. Toddlers add marks; older kids can do most of it themselves.
What is a good gift for Grandma's 70th or 80th birthday from the grandkids?
A bound book of letters and drawings, one page from each grandchild, collected in secret over a month. Add a page from each of her children. For a big birthday, the effort of collecting is the gift.
What should grandkids get a grandma who has everything?
Something with the grandkids in it, or time with them: a planned day out where she picks the place, a voice keepsake, or a photo book of the year with her in it. Objects she did not ask for usually end up in a cupboard.
How can long-distance grandkids give Grandma a birthday gift?
Mail the kids' card a week early, send a birthday video on the morning, and schedule a video call where the grandkids sing and she opens the package with them watching.
