Personalized gifts for toddlers that get used, plus DIY ideas

The best personalized gifts for toddlers are things they already love to do, made about them: a book with their name and face in it, a story recorded in a grandparent's voice, a chunky wooden name puzzle, a little photo album of family faces, or a coloring book where they are the main character. A monogrammed blanket is lovely for the parents. A book where the toddler sees themselves is the one the toddler will drag to you every night.

Below are the main types, a few makers of each, DIY versions you can do for close to nothing, and the safety checks that matter for under-3s.

Why personalization works for toddlers

Toddlers are learning who they are and who their people are. By 3, the CDC's milestones include saying their first name when asked and saying what is happening in a picture or a book, like "running" or "eating." A page that shows them running, with their name on it, is something they can recognize and talk about.

As a dad of two small kids, I have learned that the gifts that last are the ones with the child in them. That is the case for personalization in one sentence: it turns a nice object into one they choose.

Personalized storybooks. These are the most popular category. Wonderbly sells personalized books sorted by age, including for newborns and 0 to 3 year olds, and Hooray Heroes lets you design the child's character, from skin tone to hair and eyes. I See Me! sells name books and coloring books. Preview the whole book before ordering; some are better written than others.

Recorded voices. For a toddler with a grandparent far away, a story in that person's voice may beat any printed name. Yoto's Make Your Own cards let you record your own stories in the Yoto app and play them on the player, and Hallmark sells a range of recordable storybooks. Our guide to long-distance grandparents gifts has more along these lines.

Name puzzles. A wooden puzzle that spells their name is a classic, and good ones last for years. Choose big, thick pieces for a 1 or 2 year old, and check the age label (more below).

Coloring books. A coloring book with them in it gives a 2 or 3 year old a reason to sit with crayons. Our guide to personalized coloring books with photos compares how the different kinds work. Colorkin is one maker: pages are drafted with AI illustration tools from your photos, and every page is checked and finished by a person. The Digital Storybook is $29 as a printable PDF and the Printed Keepsake is $59.

DIY personalized toddler gifts

You do not need to buy anything for a gift that is about them.

  1. A family faces book. Print photos of parents, grandparents, cousins and pets, label each one, and put them in a small sturdy album or laminate the pages and bind them with a ring. Toddlers love naming everyone.
  2. A recorded story. Record yourself or a grandparent reading their favorite book on your phone. Play it at bedtime.
  3. A coloring page of them. Take a photo of your toddler doing something they love and turn it into a line drawing. Our guide to turning a photo into a coloring page for free shows how, and our guide to making a coloring book from photos covers a whole booklet.
  4. A name banner. Cut big letters from card, let older siblings decorate them, and string them over the bed or the door, out of reach.
  5. A "my things" box. Paint or decorate a shoebox with their name for treasures, crayons or a collection of rocks.

Safety checks for personalized gifts

Personalized does not change how a toy should be checked, and a few personalized favorites are worth a second look.

  • Small parts. The AAP lists toys with small parts and pieces of toys among common choking hazards, and says to follow the age recommendations on toy packages. Letter tiles and name beads can be small.
  • Bigger than the mouth. The AAP's safe toy buying guide says to make sure all toys and parts are larger than your child's mouth, which is a fast test for a name puzzle's pieces.
  • Ribbons and strings. The same guide advises taking off loose ribbons or strings to avoid strangulation. Hang name banners well out of reach, and save name necklaces and bracelets for older kids.
  • Batteries. Recordable books and players run on batteries; the AAP guide warns about button and lithium coin batteries in toys, so check the battery compartment is secure.
  • Stuffed toys. If you embroider a name on a plush, the AAP guide says to look for well-made stuffed toys with parts on tight and secure seams.

Ordering in time

Made-to-order gifts take longer than store-bought ones, and holiday weeks are slower still. Check each maker's production and shipping estimate before you order, and keep a DIY option in your back pocket. A printable file you make or buy can be printed the same night.

Questions parents ask

What is the best personalized gift for a toddler?

Something they will use over and over that is clearly about them: a book with their name and face in it, a story recorded in a loved one's voice, a sturdy wooden name puzzle with big pieces, or a coloring book that shows them. Personalization works best on things they already like to do.

Are personalized name necklaces or bracelets OK for toddlers?

It is safer to wait. Beads and charms are small parts, and the AAP lists toys with small parts among common choking hazards for young children and advises removing loose ribbons and strings from toys to avoid strangulation.

How far ahead should I order a personalized toddler gift?

Earlier than a regular gift. Personalized items are made to order, so allow for production plus shipping, and more in November and December. If you are short on time, a DIY version or a digital file you print at home avoids the wait.

What can I make myself as a personalized toddler gift?

A homemade photo book of family faces, a recorded bedtime story, a name banner, a coloring page made from a photo of them, or a 'helper' apron with their name. These cost little and often mean more because they are about this particular child.
