Gifts for grandparents from a new baby: first-year ideas

The best first gift from a new baby to new grandparents is a printed photo of them holding the baby for the first time, framed before the baby is a month old. After that, the gifts that land are small and specific: newborn footprints on a card, a short letter "from the baby" about the first days, a video of the first smiles, and a kit for the grandparents' house that says "you are going to babysit". The baby cannot make anything yet, so the parents are really giving the grandparents a way into the baby's life.

Below are ideas for the announcement, the first weeks and the first year, plus a short list of things to buy. For gifts once the grandkids are old enough to make things themselves, see our guide to gifts for grandparents from grandkids.

If you are announcing the pregnancy

The news is the gift. A small object just gives them something to hold while it sinks in.

  • A framed ultrasound print with the due month written underneath.
  • A picture book for them to read to the baby later. On the Night You Were Born by Nancy Tillman and Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes by Mem Fox are both easy to find and both work for a grandparent reading aloud. Write the due date inside the cover.
  • A calendar with the due date circled, and a few "come visit" weekends already marked.
  • For grandparents who already have grandkids, let the older cousins or the big sibling hand it over. If an older sibling is involved, our guide to preparing a toddler for a new baby has ideas for giving them a real job.

First gifts in the first weeks

These cost little and only work if someone does them early.

The first photo together. At the first meeting, take a lot of photos of each grandparent holding the baby, including a close one of the grandparent's face. Print the best one at a photo counter that week, put it in a simple frame, and hand it over on the next visit. Hospital-blur phone photos are fine. It is the date that matters.

Newborn footprints. A footprint on cardstock, with the date and "your first grandchild" or "grandchild number three" underneath. An inkless pad keeps it clean: Pearhead, for example, sells a clean-touch ink pad for baby prints. Do it while the baby is asleep and has warm feet.

A letter from the baby. One page, written by a parent in the baby's voice, with real details from the first days: what time they were born, who held them first, what they do when they are hungry, what they seem to like. No invented cuteness needed; the real details are what a grandparent rereads.

A first-smile video. The CDC lists smiling when you talk to or smile at the baby among its 2-month milestones, along with looking at your face. Film a grandparent's name being said and the baby's reaction, or film the baby smiling at the grandparent on a video call. Send it the day it happens.

Gifts that invite them in

New grandparents usually want time with the baby more than they want things. These gifts make that easy.

  • A standing visit day. A card from the baby: "Tuesdays are Grandma days", or a monthly Sunday dinner. Then keep it.
  • A grandparents' house kit. A small bin with a fitted sheet for their crib or play yard, diapers, wipes, a spare outfit, two board books and a spare bottle if the baby uses one. Keep the sleep space bare: the AAP's safe sleep guide says to make sure there are no blankets, pillows, stuffed toys or bumper pads in your baby's bed. Older relatives may remember different advice, so a kit that is already set up the current way avoids an awkward conversation.
  • The same book at both houses. Give the grandparents a copy of the baby's favorite board book and keep one at home. Long-distance grandparents can read it on video calls. Our guide to long-distance grandparent gifts has more of these.
  • Their voice for the baby. Hallmark sells recordable storybooks where you press a button to record your own voice reading the story. Give one to the grandparents to record, then it lives at your house. It is technically a gift for the baby, but the recording session is half the gift.

Through the first year

When Gift from the baby Effort
1 month Framed first photo together One print, one frame
2 months First-smile video One phone video
3 to 6 months Monthly photo in the mail, same spot each month A stamp a month
First holiday A small brag-book album of the first months An hour
9 months Footprint next to the newborn footprint, same card Five minutes
First birthday A photo book of the year, with the grandparents in it An evening

For the first birthday itself, our first birthday keepsake ideas cover traditions to start, and gifts for a 1-year-old that aren't toys is useful when the grandparents ask what to bring.

Things to buy

If you would rather buy something, keep the baby in it.

  • A photo book of the first months from a service like Chatbooks or Shutterfly.
  • A digital frame you load from your phone, such as Nixplay or Aura. Set it up with a starter batch of photos before you give it, especially for grandparents who do not like apps.
  • Mailed photo cards through Postable, if you know you will not get to the post office.
  • A storybook with the family in it. Colorkin makes a coloring storybook from your photos, with room for the grandparents alongside the new baby and any older siblings. Pages are drafted with AI illustration tools and checked and finished by a person; it is $29 as a printable PDF or $59 printed, and extra printed copies are $19 if both sets of grandparents want one. Be honest with yourself about timing: a newborn will not color for a couple of years, so this is a book for the grandparents now and one to color together later. You can also make a single page yourself with our guide to turning a photo into a coloring page for free.

Questions parents ask

What is a good first gift from a new baby to grandparents?

A printed, framed photo of the grandparent holding the baby for the first time, taken at that first meeting. Close behind: a card with the newborn's footprints, a short letter 'from the baby' about the first days, and a video of the first smiles around two months.

What can I give new grandparents when announcing a pregnancy?

Something they can open: a framed ultrasound print with the due month written on it, a picture book for them to read to the baby later, or a calendar with the due date already circled. The news is the gift; the object just gives them something to hold while they take it in.

What do new grandparents actually want?

Mostly time with the baby and to feel included. Gifts that invite them in, like a standing visit day, a shared photo album you keep filling, or a kit for their own house so the baby can stay over, tend to mean more than décor.

What should go in a baby kit for the grandparents' house?

A fitted sheet for their crib or play yard, diapers and wipes, a change of clothes, a few board books and a spare bottle if the baby uses one. Skip pillows, blankets, bumpers and stuffed toys in the sleep space, which the AAP advises keeping out of a baby's bed.
