Gifts for a niece or nephew: ideas from the aunt or uncle
The best gifts for a young niece or nephew are the ones that make you their person: a book you give every birthday with a note inside, mail that arrives in their own name, an outing with just you, and the slightly messy art kit their parents would never buy for themselves. Expensive toys from an aunt or uncle tend to vanish into the toy box. A tradition with you in it does not.
Below are ideas by type and by age, from 1 to 6, with free options and a few makers worth knowing. If you are shopping for a toddler in general, our guide to personalized gifts for toddlers has more on name gifts. This one is about the aunt and uncle role.
Why the aunt or uncle gift is different
Parents buy the things a child needs. Grandparents often buy the big things. An aunt or uncle gets to give the thing that is about the two of you.
That fits what the American Academy of Pediatrics says about toys in general: its clinical report stresses play with caregivers that is rich in language, pretending and problem-solving over the toy itself. A gift that gives you and your niece or nephew something to do together, on a visit or a video call, is doing the job a good toy is supposed to do.
Tradition gifts: the same thing every year
A tradition is the one gift nobody else in the family can copy.
- The birthday book. One picture book every birthday, with a note inside the front cover: the date, their age, one thing you love about them this year. By ten, they have a shelf from you.
- The holiday ornament or small figure. One a year, labeled on the bottom with the year.
- The height mark. A spot on a door frame at your house where you measure them every visit.
- The annual outing. The same zoo, the same bakery, the same pumpkin patch, every year, with a photo in the same spot.
The birthday book works at any distance. Mail it, and read it together on a video call.
Mail in their own name
Young kids rarely get mail, so a letter addressed to them is an event.
- Postcards from your trips or just from your town, with a short note and a drawing.
- A magazine subscription. Highlights publishes Hello for ages 0 to 2 and High Five for ages 3 to 5, and a monthly issue in their name keeps you in mind all year.
- A letter they can answer. Include a blank card and a stamped envelope addressed back to you. A three- or four-year-old can scribble a reply with a parent's help.
The fun-but-messy gift (check with the parents)
Aunts and uncles have a reputation for giving the drum kit. You can be the fun one without making the parents' lives harder.
- Real art supplies. Washable markers, tempera paint sticks such as Kwik Stix, a big roll of paper. Look for the AP seal, which the Art and Creative Materials Institute says marks products certified by a toxicologist to contain no materials in sufficient quantities to be toxic or injurious.
- A big cardboard box and markers for a 3 to 5 year old, with a copy of Not a Box by Antoinette Portis (library record).
- A play tent or fort kit if there is room.
- Dress-up clothes: a cape, a hat, a doctor's coat. By four, the CDC lists pretending to be something else during play, like a teacher, superhero or dog.
Ask first about anything loud, big or glittery. A quick text saves the gift from the closet.
Gifts by age
| Age | Gifts that fit | Something with you in it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A board book with a note from you, a soft toy, a small push toy, bath books | A small framed photo of the two of you |
| 2 | A child-sized broom or watering can, stacking cups, chunky crayons | A recorded story in your voice |
| 3 | Pretend-play sets, washable art supplies, a picture book series | A coloring page made from a photo of you together |
| 4 to 6 | Dress-up, a first board game, a kid camera, a magazine in their name | A day out with just you |
At around 18 months, the CDC notes children copy you doing chores, like sweeping with a broom, which is why a small broom or watering can goes over so well with a two-year-old nephew or niece.
Time with you, written down
For many aunts and uncles, the best gift is a promise of time.
- A coupon book: one pancake breakfast, one trip to the playground of their choice, one movie afternoon.
- A standing date: the first Saturday of the month is "your day" with them, or a weekly story call if you live far away.
- Babysitting for the parents, wrapped as a gift to the child: "One evening of fun with Aunt ___ while Mom and Dad go out."
Personalized gifts for a niece or nephew
A personalized gift is best when it includes you, not only their name.
- A recorded story. Record yourself reading their favorite book and send the audio, or slip it into the birthday book as a link.
- A homemade coloring page of the two of you. Turn a photo into line art at home; our guide to turning a photo into a coloring page for free shows how.
- A name book from another maker. Wonderbly sells personalized picture books built around a child's name.
- A storybook from family photos. Colorkin makes a coloring storybook from your photos with your niece or nephew as the hero, and an aunt or uncle can be in it too. It is drafted with AI illustration tools and checked page by page by a person, $29 as a printable PDF or $59 printed. Our guide to making a coloring book from photos covers the do-it-yourself version.
What to skip
- Clothing in a guessed size, unless the parents asked.
- Gifts with small parts when there is a baby or toddler in the house.
- Screen-based learning toys, given the AAP report's caution about the evidence for digital toys.
- Anything that needs a lot of floor space, without asking.
More guides by age and by person are on our gift ideas page, including gifts for a 4-year-old and gifts for a 3-year-old who has everything.
Questions parents ask
What should an aunt or uncle give a young niece or nephew?
Something that builds your own connection with them: a book you give every birthday with a note inside, mail in their own name, an outing with just you, or the art supplies their parents would not think to buy. Ask the parents first about space and noise.
What is a good gift for a 1 year old niece?
A sturdy board book with a note from you inside the cover, a soft toy, a set of chunky crayons for later, or a photo of the two of you in a small frame. At one, the gift is really for her parents and for her later, so keep it simple.
What is a good gift for a 3 year old nephew?
A pretend-play set, a big cardboard box with markers, washable art supplies, a picture book you read together on the call, or a ticket for an outing with you. Three-year-olds want company more than stuff.
What is a good personalized gift for a niece?
A picture book with her name in it, a recorded story in your voice, a coloring page made from a photo of the two of you, or a personalized storybook from photos. A personalized gift lands best when it includes you, not just her name.
