Personalized coloring books for adults: wedding, retirement, more
A personalized coloring book for an adult is usually 10 to 30 pages of line art made from photos of one person's life: a couple's wedding day and first home, a retiring teacher's classroom and favorite trail, the street a grandmother grew up on. You can commission one from an independent illustrator, make the pages yourself with a photo-to-line-art app or by tracing, and print a single bound copy through a print-on-demand service for a few dollars. The format works best when the pages are places and moments the recipient will recognize, with more detail than a children's book.
Below are page ideas by occasion, the three ways to get one made, and the details that make an adult book different from a kids' one.
Page ideas by occasion
Adults like smaller spaces and more detail than kids do, so pick photos with texture: brick, leaves, lace, tile, a crowded bookshelf.
| Occasion | Pages that work |
|---|---|
| Wedding (for the couple) | Where you met, the proposal spot, the venue, the cake, the dog in a bow tie, the first dance |
| Wedding (for guests) | A page per table or a "draw the couple" frame for the kids' table; keep it simple |
| Anniversary | One page per year or per home, the honeymoon map, the car you drove for a decade |
| For a wife or husband | Inside jokes, favorite cafe, the view from your porch, the two of you on a trail |
| Retirement | The office or classroom, the commute, the hobby they are retiring to (garden, boat, golf course), a "next chapter" page |
| Milestone birthday (40, 60, 80) | One page per decade, from childhood house to today |
| Memorial | Their garden, their kitchen, their hands at work. Leave space for family to add notes |
A short caption under each page ("Our first apartment, 2014") turns a stack of drawings into a story. If you want help writing a few lines that connect the pages, our guide to writing a short story for your child uses the same structure: a beginning, a few small events and a warm ending.
Three ways to get one made
1. Commission an illustrator. Independent illustrators on craft marketplaces and their own sites sell custom line drawings from photos, often priced per page or per figure. This is the best route for a wedding or retirement gift with lots of detail. Ask for a sample, confirm you can print the files as many times as you like, and get that in writing. The U.S. Copyright Office notes that copyright protects original artistic works, so the illustrator keeps the copyright unless you agree otherwise. A personal-use license is normally all you need for a gift.
2. Use a photo-to-line-art app. Apps turn a photo into a coloring page in seconds. FotoMedley's pricing page listed a $4.99 pack of 10 creations and a $9.99 pack of 25 when I checked on October 25, 2026. Results depend on the photo: clear light, a plain background and faces that fill the frame work best. Expect to throw some out.
3. Make it yourself. Trace photos on a tablet or a light box, or use a free editor. Our guide to turning a photo into a coloring page for free walks through the free tools step by step. Adults will color fine lines, so you can keep more detail than you would for a child.
Then print. Lulu's coloring book page says you can order a single copy, and listed an 8.5 x 11 inch black-and-white paperback starting at 4.28 USD and a coil-bound version starting at 7.14 USD when I checked on October 25, 2026. Those are starting print costs before shipping. Coil binding lies flat, which matters more for colored pencils than you would think. Our guide to printing and binding a coloring book at home covers the free route.
What makes an adult coloring book different
Paper. Adults tend to use colored pencils, fine markers and sometimes watercolor pencils. Print one side only so markers do not bleed onto the next drawing, and choose the heaviest paper your printer or print service offers. Our paper guide explains weights.
Detail. A children's page has thick lines and big shapes. An adult page can have thin lines, patterns and backgrounds. Keep faces simple, though: faces drawn with too many lines look older and harsher than the person.
Flattering likeness. Everyone is picky about their own face. Use photos the recipient already likes of themselves, and skip anything they have untagged on social media.
Calm, not therapy. Plenty of adults find coloring relaxing. A 2026 meta-analysis of nine small trials in adults 55 and older found lower anxiety and depression scores after mandala coloring and drawing programs, but the authors rated the certainty of the evidence as very low. Give it as a pleasant thing to do with a cup of coffee, not as a wellness product. Our guide to coloring for calm has more on what coloring does and does not do.
Where Colorkin fits, honestly
Colorkin is built for families with young kids. Each storybook is written around the children as main characters, with parents, grandparents and pets in supporting roles, and the pages are drafted with AI illustration tools from your photos and then checked and finished by a person. The line work is thick and simple because it is meant for small hands.
So it is not the right product for a wedding gift between two adults, a retirement party or a book for your wife. It can be a good fit when the adult is a grandparent or a new parent and the real stars are the little kids. I made the first one for my own two kids, and it works because they are in it. For a grandparent, that is often the point: see our gifts for grandparents from grandkids.
For everything else, an illustrator, an app or a weekend of tracing will serve you better.
A checklist before you order or print
- Collect 15 to 25 photos and pick the 10 to 20 with the clearest light and least clutter.
- Decide the order: chronological works for anniversaries and milestones, by place for retirement.
- Write a one-line caption for each page.
- Get a sample page approved before paying for the full set, whoever is drawing it.
- Confirm print rights in writing if an illustrator is involved.
- Print a single proof copy and check line darkness before ordering more.
- Add a set of good colored pencils. A book with nothing to color it with is half a gift.

Questions parents ask
Can I get a coloring book made of photos of my wife or husband?
Yes. You can commission line art from an independent illustrator, turn your own photos into pages with a photo-to-line-art app, or trace them yourself, then print one bound copy through a print-on-demand service. Pick 10 to 20 photos of places and moments that mean something to the two of you.
What do you put in a wedding or anniversary coloring book?
The places that matter (where you met, the first apartment, the venue), a few couple portraits, the pets, a map of the honeymoon route, a page for each year or milestone, and a short caption under each page. Leave one or two blank frames for new memories.
Is adult coloring actually relaxing?
Many adults find it calming, and a 2026 meta-analysis of nine small trials in people 55 and older found lower anxiety and depression scores after mandala coloring and drawing programs. The authors rated the certainty of that evidence as very low, so treat it as a pleasant hobby rather than a treatment.
Does Colorkin make coloring books for adults?
Not really. Colorkin storybooks are written for families with young children, with the kids as the main characters. Adults appear in them as parents and grandparents. For an adult-only book, an illustrator, an app or a DIY book is a better fit.
